The Art of Ninja

brad September 10, 2015 Japan, Ninja, Tokyo

Today we were trained in the mysterious ancient Japanese art of being a ninja.  We learned about the history of ninjas and their role in espionage (being a spy). We also learned that our preconceived notions of ninjas yelling ‘hi-yaa’ while swinging nun-chucks were far from the truth.  In reality, the ninja warriors were stealthy characters that slipped in and out from their targets in silence. Very different from the samurai, the ninjas tried to avoid fighting by sneaking around, bribing guards, stealing information and running away.  The samurai, centered on loyalty and pride would never run or hide… but that was central to the ninja’s survival and success.

Ok, so it was a little scary and weird… and, yes, we thought we were maybe looking a little too like ISIS while learning to throw stars, use blow-darts, and swing swords – but it was fun!
