Flamenco night in Cordoba, Spain

Brooke Stroh October 19, 2015 Cordoba, Flamenco, gypsies, India, Spain

Last night, two amazing things happened…the first was our best friends, the Kavanaugh’s, came to visit us in Cordoba, Spain and the second was that we went to a fancy restaurant and saw a Flamenco dance.

It was very beautiful. It was amazing how fast their feet could move. When the ladies danced, their faces were very stern but I thought that they would be smiling the whole time.

Lola, the dancer, had a very pretty dress. It had polka dots all over it. Like any usual flamenco dancer’s dress, it was red with white polka dots. It had ruffles at the bottom and at every ruffle it would change the pattern.  When she danced, her dress moved and spun and she held it like her dress was her dancing partner.

IMG_1666When they were dancing, they would stomp very loudly on their high heels. It’s funny because when you think about it in ballet the dancers would try not to make a sound on their feet but then if you go to flamenco dance the dancers try to make a very good noise from their shoes hitting hard on the ground. The flamenco dancer Lola was on a wooden platform to make the sound last longer and make it louder.

Here are some interesting facts about flamenco:

  • The gypsies made flamenco
  • The gypsies are originally from India
  • The gypsies typically follow any national or local religion where they live
  • The gypsies are typically outsiders or lower class from the society they live in
  • In Granada, the gypsies had to live outside the fortress walls of the city in caves
  • The songs that the gypsies sing are about love, loss, and difficulties being on the outside of the society they live in

The night was amazing. At the end of the night, the flamenco dancers asked the kids to dance with them. The beat went Clap, Clap Clap, Rest. Clap, Clap, Clap, Rest. Clap, Clap, Clap, Rest. Then we would dance to it. Clap, Clap, Clap, Tap. Clap, Clap, Clap, Tap. We did the tapping with our feet. Also that night our friends Eve and Kate came to see us. So, they also did the flamenco dancing too!

If I was living as a gypsy I would be sad and I would write a song of sorrow but happiness when I found my true love.   Here’s a video that dadd-o did of the dancing and singing.
